State components
The walk plate is the entry. This is the map.
Hover a state, or tab to it, or use the jump list. The panel lists the components that exist for that state. Shading, if you turn it on, is one series at a time.
50 states: 2024 crime rates and z-score (z), the safety reading aid, National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 2024 means and z, the 2023 imprisonment control, and the property residual.
50 states, not shaded: the 2024 jobs net-rate rank (1 = healthiest). Five-quarter job flows, pay weights, and the school FLAG band stay Oregon (and the United States, where that column exists). Graduation and absenteeism are blank outside Oregon. The District of Columbia (DC) is out of the z and off this map. Portland is not a row. Short labels are in the glossary on the walk plate.
No shading. The fill is neutral so the map is not a grade. Color, when selected, follows the sign of a z (blue negative, rust positive) or, for imprisonment, a single slate scale. Color stops at ±2 for a z so the drawing has a bound. The number in the panel is not winsorized.
Hover a state
The panel fills with that state's components. It does not report a single grade.
Outlines are geometry only (us-states.geojson, a map-shape file). They are not a data series. Component table: state_components.csv. Crime vintage: CDE refresh 15 September 2026. NAEP: 2024 assessment, retrieved 2026-09-27. Prison: BJS yearend 2023.
